Japanese Koi
I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A LIST OF SOME OF THE POSITIVE
PURPOSES TO BUY AND KEEP JAPANESE KOI IN YOUR POND.
- Koi can become great pets and be trained to eat from
your hand. They eat many things besides fish food. Like certain weeds and
fresh fruits. Koi can absorb the colors from the fruits and deepen their
own colors
- Koi can eat certain algae and moss not eaten by Amur so
help clean the pond. This can be a big help at golf courses and private
ponds.
- Koi clean the bottom and remove certain nitrogen wastes
from the water. This fact usually means that in a private pond that up to
500 more pounds of sport fish can be had per acre of water! Stocking rates
of sport fish are based on having 2500 to 3000 lbs of fish per acre. Lets
say your 1 acre pond had 1000 bluegills in it. Then your bluegills could
normally get to a weight of 2.5 to 3 lbs each based on the maximum weight
of fish your pond would support. But if you ad say 20 koi fish to the 1
acre then you might get an ADDED 500 pounds of sport fish making your bluegills
get 3 lbs to 3.5 lbs each! Not all bluegills will get 3 lbs but this is
an example and it works for other fish like redears and bass too. You gain
the 500 lbs by having the koi present in your pond. Fish farmers might place
2000 catfish per acre hoping to harvest 3000 lbs of fish each averaging
1.5 lbs each. With koi in the pond they might gain 500 extra lbs of fish
raised. Fish farmers might also put in an air system in the pond and the
extra air might let them raise 4000 lbs of fish per acre. But ponds like
that need constant care. We are speaking of a normal pond on your farm,
golf course or residence that may be 1 to 100 acres of water.
- Koi are very beautiful and can add a touch of class and
beauty to a home pond or golf course and country club. Maybe if the players
see the koi they will talk more about your golf course or place of residence
to others in a respected manor.
- Koi live to be very old from 25 to a reported 200 years
! They get more beautiful with age. They look good in small or large schools
but of course better in big multiple colored schools of koi.
