Fatty Acids:
Essential for Life

One of the most important and far reaching health discoveries of the Twentieth Century is that made by Dr. Johanna Budwig, a German biochemist and lipid (fats) researcher who is a leading European authority on fats and nutrition. She found that particular types of fats are directly involved in causing cancer. She has been nominated for the Nobel Prize seven times. She has used her methods to successfully treat terminal cancer patients, people with heart diseases, arthritis and other ailments after they had been given up as hopeless by the conventional medical practitioners. Her methods were so simple that any housewife could useher techniques with no special training and with good results. In fact, this is exactly what happened in many cases, people with serious diseases were successfully treating themselves to the astonishment of the conventional medical practitioners. However, in spite of the simplicity of Dr. Budwig's discoveries, they also reveal a profound relationship to not only the harmonious working of the human body, but man's relationship with nature itself.

At the beginning of her career, in the course of her treatment of ill people, Dr. Budwig studied blood samples to see if there is any correlation between the blood quality of ill people and healthy people. After studying thousands of blood samples, she discovered that the difference was that healthy people had a higher content of Omega~3 oils in their blood than those who are ill. Omega~3 is one of the Essential fatty Acids, or EFAs, which is necessary for the proper functioning of the body. She experimented on finding the best ways to get the Omega~3 oils properly absorbed into a person's system and ultimately found that the richest source of Omega~3 oil is flax seeds. However, only oil that has been protected from heat and oxidation, caused by oxygen and light, is sufficiently pure enough to be of benefit to human health. Oils not prepared this way quickly become rancid and are detrimental to human health. In fact, Dr. Budwig, with further research, came to the conclusion that the vast majority of chronic illnesses today are caused by the improper mass processing of foods and oils, plus poor nutrition and poor food preparation (especially by using oils that produce free radicals when heated) as well as the world-wide use of dangerous pesticides which contaminate the food and destroy the electrons.

Based on these observations, Dr. Budwig began treating her patients by giving them a combination of high quality flax seed oil, which is rich in Omega~3 oil, and quark, which is something similar to cottage cheese or yogurt in that it is rich in high quality protein. Quark is difficult to obtain in the U.S, but either yogurt, cottage cheese, skim milk, soy milk or rice milk is a good substitute. (For the proper ratio of oil to protein, please see experiments.) The reason for the mixture of the oil with a high quality protein is that by combining the protein with the oil, the oil becomes water soluble in the body and can be absorbed more readily. It can enter the smallest capillaries, dissolving any of the
undesirable fats and cleaning out the veins and arteries. It also strengthens the heart, dissolves tumors and works wonders with arthritis. It sounds like a lot, but it really works. Dr. Budwig worked with many patients who were terminally ill and some who had only hours to live. She gave them the combination of oil-protein plus organic foods, plus exercise, fresh air and used the healing powers of the sun to cure these "hopeless" cases who sometimes started to show improvement within days. Following is a quote from one of her books:

"I often take very sick cancer patients away from hospital where they are said to have only a few days left to live, or perhaps only a few hours. This is mostly accompanied by very good results. The very first thing which these patients and their families tell me is that, in the hospital, it was said that they could no longer urinate or produce bowel movements. They suffered from dry coughing without being able to bring up any mucous. Everything was blocked. It greatly encourages them when suddenly, in all these symptoms, the surface-active fats, with their wealth of electrons, start reactivating the vital functions and the patient immediately begins to feel better. It is very interesting
to ask how this sudden change is possible. It has to do with the reaction patterns, with the
character of electrons. I will return to these electrons later. In the last two years, I have come to be very fond of them. A friend of my work in Paris, wrote to me how wonderful it is that you have discovered the original birthplace of the electrons in seed oils to be the sun. That's how these connections are made!"

One of the significant aspects of Dr. Budwig's work is that she has discovered, (or rather
rediscovered) the affinity of the human body with the sun. If the body has the right balance of oils and proteins, it has a magnetic field which attracts the photons in sunlight and thus is open to the healing powers of the sun. I tried Dr. Budwig's methods for general health improvement, and I was amazed that within even less than the three days she predicted, I felt an incredible improvement in so many areas that it would take too much time to describe it here. I then recommended it to several friends and those who took it seriously had similar experiences to mine. We all felt an increased feeling of general well-being, a feeling of lightness, more energy, better circulation and, when in the sun, I felt the healing power of the sun affecting my skin much differently than before. Also, every week or two, I become aware of feeling better in different ways. Old aches go away, my skin improves and I am able to do things better. One woman felt so good about it that she gave it to her children and said that right away she could see improvements in their skin tone. As she spoke, I saw that her own skin had more color and was radiant. And this was only about two days after she started taking the oil-protein combination.

Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) are as essential as vitamins. They are essential because if you do not get enough of them you will become ill in some way; without linoleic acid (an EFA), you will die. Most North Americans get little or none of these EFAs. The body does not manufacture EFA's, you must obtain them through your diet and the great majority of foods do not contain Essential Fatty Acids. It has been shown that body cells deprived of Essential Fatty Acids become cancerous, and it is difficult, if not impossible, to heal from cancer without adequate levels of these essential fats.

Cancer is a disease, which means that the body is "ill at ease". By restoring the body and giving it the power to heal itself, or by giving it a "boost", it is possible to defeat any type of cancer. Poor quality foods, especially deep fried foods, contain high levels of what are known as "free radicals". It is now understood that free radicals are highly reactive chemicals that can cause cells in the body to degenerate and become cancerous. Free radicals cause the body to "rust", just as water and road salt cause the steel body of a car to rust. A high load of free radicals in the body will hinder the healing of primary tumors and promote tumor growth elsewhere in the body.

Dr. Budwig's methods are well documented and have stood the tests of opposition from the conventional medical establishment. Her private cancer clinic thrived in Germany for over thirty years with many, many satisfied patients is testament to the truth of her treatments. Even though her methods work, I believe she was discredited because she spoke out against the giant chemical company she worked for.

Although there are many excellent doctors and nutritionists who are following in her footsteps, I am especially fond of Dr. Budwig's approach to things because she is not only a brilliant scientist and researcher, but also a high minded idealist who approaches the subject also from a philosophical and spiritual point of view.

For some individuals, flax seed oil may offer only half of the solution. Those deficient in co-factor nutrients, specifically the vitamins pro-A, A, C, E, B2, B6, pantothenic acid, B12, biotin, and the minerals calcium, magnesium, potassium, sulfur, and zinc, sometimes have difficulty in converting the omega-6 fatty acid, linoleic acid, found in flax and other seed oils to the healthful prostaglandins.

Still others are thought to lack the necessary enzyme (catalyst) to make this conversion; particularly those afflicted with diabetes, asthma, cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis, alcoholism and the aged. For those suffering from co-factor deficiencies, a broad spectrum multi-vitamin and mineral may be recommended with, perhaps, an oil supplement rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). Individuals who may lack the proper enzyme system would require a GLA supplement in addition to the flax seed oil to effectively skip over the absent or impaired enzyme and continue on toward normal production of beneficial prostaglandins.

Nature's most potent concentration of GLA comes in the form of borage seed oil (24%). A great deal of scientific research has been conducted with supplements rich in GLA, resulting in significant interest regarding the aforementioned health ailments, as well as those affected by pre-menstrual syndrome, benign breast disease, eczema, psoriasis, obesity, and vascular disorders.

When considering an essential fatty acid supplement and deciding on either flax or borage seed oils, the most sensible solution may be a formulation of the two. The combination of both flax and borage seed oil yields a true Omega-Twin by providing nature's best of the omega-3 fatty acids in flax with the best of omega-6 fatty acids in GLA rich borage oil.

Supplementation with flax seed & borage seed oils makes good sense because Omega-3 fatty acids and GLA act together on the production of beneficial prostaglandins and over 60 health problems have proven to benefit from both flax seed oil and borage seed oil supplements.

Conclusion : The answer appears not to be no fat, but the right fat, as common to flax and borage seed oils, to achieve optimal health. Past and present scientific research supports the use of essential fatty acid nutrients in promoting optimal health. Flax seed oil is recognized as nature's richest source of essential and omega-3 fatty acids. Borage seed oil is recognized as nature's richest source of GLA. These natural plant substances used alone have created a great deal of interest in the treatment of numerous health problems. Evidence exists to suggest the combination of omega-3 fatty acids with gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) may further complement the therapeutic result of either fatty acid used singularly.

Additional information on Flax seed oil:

In this day and age of fat phobia and the resultant barrage of low fat and non-fat food products lining the grocery store aisles, a recommendation to supplement your daily diet with one to two tablespoons of essential fatty acid rich flax or borage seed oil would appear to go against what you are being told. To the contrary, this is exactly what health conscious consumers are doing across the country, not only to attain and maintain health. The fatty acids have been scientifically validated to not only benefit optimal health, but in many instances, serve as a treatment for the over 60 health ailments.

It is true Americans should not consume more than 20-30% of daily calories as fats, a lack of the dietary essential fatty acids has been suggested to facilitate degenerative disease. Surveys indicate that at least 80% of our population is deficient in the essential fatty acids, this may present a serious health threat. Unfortunately, mass commercial refinement of fats and oils products and foods containing them has effectively eliminated the essential fatty acids from our food chain, contributing to our modern day deficiency.

Flax seed oil is considered by many to be the answer to this health dilemma. Oil extracted from flax seed is unique because it contains both essential fatty acids: alpha-linolenic, an omega-3 fatty acid, and linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid, in appreciable amounts. Flax seed oil is the world's richest source of omega-3 fatty acids at a whopping 57% (over two times the amount of omega-3 fatty acids as fish oils). Omega-3 fatty acids have been extensively studied for their beneficial effects toward:

                    + Arthritis
                    + Cancer
                    + High cholesterol levels
                    + Heart pain - Angina
                    + High blood pressure
                    + Multiple sclerosis
                    + Psoriasis & Eczema
                    + Stroke & heart attack

The high content of omega-3 fatty acids in flax seed oil is but one of its positive attributes. The essential fatty acids combined here have proven to impart a regulatory function on the body's fatty acid metabolism. Fat metabolism is as important, if not more critical, than our body's metabolism of proteins and carbohydrates as evidenced by the drastic rise in fat related degenerative diseases, such as vascular disease and strokes. Dietary essential fatty acids common to flax seed oil are ultimately converted to hormone-like substances known as prostaglandins, and are important for the regulation of a host of bodily functions including:

                    +  inflammation, pain, and swelling
+  pressure in the eye, joints or blood vessels
+  secretions from mucus membranes and their viscosity
+  smooth muscle & autonomic reflexes, gastrointestinal, arterial, ear, heart
                    +  water retention
                    +  blood clotting ability
                    +  allergic response
                    +  rheumatoid arthritis
                    +  nerve transmission
+  steroid production & hormone synthesis

Scientists continue to discover regulating effects of prostaglandins. Without the essential fatty acids, the building blocks of prostaglandins, a malfunction of fat metabolism is certain, as are problems in the regulation of the above listed bodily functions.
