For two decades Bill Boyer owned and operated a highly successful and internationally recognized woodwind repair service. Mr. Boyer also served as the principal oboist with the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra.
Boyer holds two music degrees from the University of Michigan. He spent a year in the Netherlands on a Fulbright Grant, after which he established himself as a conductor of semi-professional orchestras in Tennessee and Texas. During his "orchestra years" Bill taught large numbers of private woodwind students from junior high age through college. He taught woodwinds at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, TX, and at Cameron College in Lawton, OK.
In 1985-86 Bill attended the band instrument repair school at Red Wing, MN, where he was a student of Gene Beckwith and David Townsend. He has been a member of the National Association of Band Instrument Repair Technicians (NAPBIRT) since 1989 and has attended advanced clinics at several NAPBIRT conferences.
In 1986 Bill set up shop at Bloomington, IN, and has been under contract with the Indiana University School of Music since 1987 to keep their very large inventory of woodwinds in good playing condition -- from contrabassoons to piccolos!
Bill studied oboe with Andre Andraud, Robert Mayer, Florian Mueller, Robert Sprenkle, and Lare Wardrop, all former major symphony oboists. He was principal oboe of the National High School Orchestra at Interlochen for two summers and was principal oboe of the Chicago Civic Orchestra before going on to the Eastman School of Music on a full scholarship. Bill actually started with the clarinet and played that instrument as well as saxophone early in his career.
