The descendancy
of the James Campbell line from the William Campbell of Northampton
County, Virginia is deduced from the constant presence of the young James
on farms near N105 (Whitelaw's identification of a Northampton County, Virg.
property), the family home of this William Campbell in the period of interest.
Fortunately, the name James seems to exist only as one individual at a
time. When William's estate is settled in 1718, the administration is passed
to a lawyer from Snow Hill, Maryland where James definitely is found
over an extended period. Since there are no other Campbells in Snow Hill
at that time it seems likely that James is the son of the deceased William.
Other sources suggest William had a relative, John, residing in Ayr, Scotland.
Both were merchants with a strong interest in trading crops and tobacco
from Virginia and goods from Ayr. The William at the head of this
chart is probably the ship's master that figures in Burke's account
of the ancestry of this line.
